Stripes have always been a staple in my wardrobe, with a vastly growing section dedicated entirely to them. The Breton striped shirt was initially a naval sailor’s uniform, which helped to distinguish the sailors from the waves so you could see them when they fell overboard. At the time, the French navy hailed from Brittany where ‘Breton’ is the Celtic language which is how the name came about. On a trip to the French coast, Coco Chanel was heavily inspired by the sailor’s outfits and designed a Breton top for women in 1917. Ever since the effortlessly cool stripes have been a fashion staple.
I decided to create a simple and minimal outfit by pairing my favourite River Island stripe t-shirt with my ASOS denim pinafore dress and pale pink t-bar sandals. My 'style' Pinterest boardis pretty much devoted to stripes. I've put together a mood board of my favourites below - I couldn't miss out Audrey Hepburn!
